Heriot-Watt University, established in 1821, is a renowned public research institution based in Edinburgh, Scotland. It is recognized as the world’s first mechanics’ institute and is the eighth-oldest higher education institution in the UK. The Medical Device Manufacturing Centre (MDMC), headquartered at Heriot-Watt University, is a collaborative initiative involving multiple Scottish universities, including the University of Edinburgh, the University of Glasgow, the University of Dundee, and Robert Gordon University. Funded by Scottish Enterprise, the MDMC provides medical device developers and manufacturers with essential advice, technical expertise, and facilities to translate medical device concepts into commercial products. The centre’s mission encompasses offering expert guidance on manufacturing, engineering, regulatory issues, and sustainability.

In 2023, the MDMC received an additional £3.35 million in funding from Scottish Enterprise to further its work in developing innovative medical devices and enhancing industry sustainability.

The MDMC’s collaborative approach and state-of-the-art facilities position it as a pivotal entity in advancing medical device innovation within Scotland and beyond.
